More than a Game?

Ben Buckley, FFA (soccer) CEO quoted in the Age 26 10 2010 re the impact of the World Cup on competing codes:

"Football has been growing rapidly in Australia and hosting the World Cup in 2022 will be like putting a turbo charger on the growth of the game and leaving a very significant footprint for the game," he said at the International Football Arena conference.

"We have a very competitive landscape, we know we compete with other codes and this is a great opportunity for football to dominate the landscape over the next 12 years."

Is everyone in harmony or will one code seek to own the sheepstation? Isn't that why footy lovers defend their turf?

This is why Andrew Demetriou will be judged very well by Australian Football followers,......(and NRL and ARU), over the course of time.

The ability of Demetriou to go hard and stare down Frank Lowy (and either Buckley was overruled by Lowy or Buckley was try to shaft his former boss/friend) and stare down Governments both Federal and State,

Demetriou has done a brilliant job.

The AFL is a beneficiary, but, undoubtedly the NRL would be hugely thankful to Demetriou and the AFL. The NRL did NOT have any 'fortresses' to defend such as the AFL does with super long term leases (not just rental, but leases over 25 and 45 years) at Docklands and the MCG. Without the AFL's muscle, then, the NRL would have stuff all of a leg to stand on to avoid being excluded from host cities at the whim of FIFA, and have stuff all scope for compensation. The NRL would've been left to be thankful for some stadium upgrades......which, between now and 2022, tell me that a certain amount of money might not be spent anyway.

btw - I also reckon Demetriou will be super well regarded via the passage of time of the drugs issue (illicit policy vs wada). But, that's another story.
