Two comments on the subject

1. The Big Picture. It is good that the AFL has not just focused on the simpler (bigger) things which are picked up by the Australian footy public and the hacks of the media - North American big bodies, USA media clout, Chinese millions of populations and African exotics. The international development of footy is a long-term and wider project.

2. Team size. Watching the AFL Grand Final replay where the Roman box (Mick Malthouse) plus the press (Ross Lyon) had up to 32 players in one quarter of the ground (and most of them inside the 50 metre line) then Australian Football at the top level may gain from smaller team nos which lead to less of what I call 'tackleball' and 'stoppageball' (despite its appeal to some former rugby/rugby league players).

Having seen European teams practice matches with small numbers and a Masters game at Coolangatta early this year, the more open game is a lot more attractive than the 'ugby' (a cross betwee rugby and ugly said Ted Hopkins, the former Carlton player and developer of Champion Data who created the term) which sometimes passes for football in the era of Lyon and beyond.
