I tend to reckon that the NRL has a very limited value proposition in establishing a fully fledged NRL side in PNG. Especially ahead of attempting a greater footprint in Australia, such as in contrast to key rivals the ARU and FFA, such as in Perth and Central Coast let alone to establish another s-e QLD side (Logan?).

For PNG, perhaps engage a side into the Toyota Cup?

From an AFL perspective, you'd love to see PNG juniors engaged in some way stand alone in perhaps the NAB U16/U18 nationals? For now, as one of the links mentions, PNG are looking toward the next QLD state championships which they are eyeing off making and winning the final.

re the seniors, there's been suggestions of a FNQ-PNG connection whether in the new north-east AFL league and perhaps oneday the AFL proper?

The big advantage the AFL has presently is the dual club foot print in SA and WA where the NRL has none and is behind A-League and ARU. That means though that future AFL growth will be perhaps be more about 'consolidation' (Tas, WA 3rd) and less about 'expansion' - unless the regional international links are exploited - but I'd still really envisage a 2nd tier entry first, - but, and this leads onto the next article that I need to get in asap, the AFL seem quite pleased with the level of talent already. Things may yet move quicker than one might've imagined??.

Agreed that if PNG march forth up to AFL status it would be staged via increasing involvement in QLD, then perhaps a joint Far North QLD joint venture, and the new NEAFL. It might be 10 years of development at each stage... or 25. Nice to dream though.
