Why Sri Lanka ?

You may be wondering if I am on an odyssey of AFL proportions what in the name of Sydney Swans am I doing in Sri Lanka… and that would be fair enough. Sri Lanka is the only country we are visiting that does not have an established competition.

Why Not?!

Fact: Sri Lanka has the same population as Australia however they all live on an island the size of Tasmania.

Fact: For the past 27 years they have been sadly gripped and torn by a civil war. War does not discriminate, children have been exposed to many horrible things changing their life’s path forever.

Fact: Sri Lanka is a beautiful country that is healing and rebuilding. The people talk of the hope that their country will be referred to as ‘the pearl drop in the ocean’ once again.

I recently travelled here with a Global Reconciliation group and some other AFL players Adam Goodes, Richard Tambling and Brad Sewell. A varied bunch of people passionate about helping with reconciliation and making change for a better future. The trip proved how sport plays a huge part in the lives and the hopes of the Sri Lankan people – especially cricket and Rugby. Sport is a great and powerful vessel to steer reconciliation efforts. Sport brings people together, it is a wonderful leveller. I hope to introduce Sri Lanka to the world of AFL.
