Closer as the crows flies, but in the age of air travel there probably isn't a huge difference between flying from South Africa to Perth or Adelaide.

The difference might be though that there are already some WA/SAf connections, e.g. Freo were putting in some development work there a few years back. I interviewed one of the dev officers at the Dockers about it a few years ago, if you search the site it'll come up.
