As people have found out, there is no way to legislate which word people use to mean what.

At least on an official level, the AFL refer to the game as "Australian Football", choosing to drop the word "rules". No idea if they've got that trademarked or anything, but if you look at all their paperwork, it's called Australian Football.

The Football Federation Australia (who run soccer) refer their their game as "Football" internally.

Calling it "AFL" is becoming common even in Australia, and I reckon there isnt much anyone could do to stop it being used that way, much as that will annoy a lot of purists.
