Opinion - Where did Port Adelaide go wrong?

Whilst the AFL would not be around today had it not been for amateur football, I now see the AFL and grassroots footy as a mutually beneficial (cyclical) relationship. Perhaps this is less profound is SA but with a stronger AFL I believe you can expect to see stronger junior football programs, which if managed properly can lead to healthier senior football clubs and competitions.

Maybe scheduling is something that needs to be revisited. Sydney has made something of Sunday matches at the SCG. Perhaps Port needs to work with the AFL to establish something similar.

With it looking likely that the AFL will cover Port's debt for the next few years, then yes I think they will look to improve their scheduling. In fact there are a lot of noises coming out now that they are acknowledging the need to be a bit more equitable across numerous clubs. Of course whether the noises turn into concrete changes to future fixtures remains to be seen, but I expect some improvements.

Actually I will admit that some of my passion has diminished. I used to hate Port and want to see them fail. But now their health is so closely linked to the health of SA footy (because the SANFL gets reduced revenue and has to cover their debts and because it diminishes the standing of footy in general in this state) it means now I'm actually torn when seeing Port do badly - there, I've admitted it, a true blue Crows and Sturt supporter who has mixed emotions about Port's predicament on and off field! It's sad that it has come to that.

I also like watching David Rodan's style of play, and have dealt with him a bit through Fiji and he's a genuinely nice guy, so I guess that's all more conspiracies to mellow my feelings about the modern Port Adelaide. I guess as a late 30-something I can't maintain the rage I had in my teens.
