would have to say that the victorians are clear leaders in this comp and the wafl league just taking out second as the next best....with a bigger poulation and the gap growing daily over SA, the wafl finally waking up and putting more money into its juniors and with more AFL players coming back into the wafl system its getting stronger year by year..It has closed the gap on SA from the mid 90s and now I see it slowly making a gap.....with its win over SA a few yrs back and its under 18s and 16s always near the top and lately winning a few nab under 16s and 18s..it constantly producing top 10 draft picks and for a while now it has been ranked 2nd in the most players supplying the AFL from a state(vic producing the most).... it has to be said that WA can lay claim to be the second best...would love to see a list of all the WA and SA players in the afl.......hope this doesnt come across as a dig at SA..I have no arguement that SA was the better football state a few decades ago but if anything its all square now...

Victorian's clear leaders in this comp????? WA clear leaders more like it. Two WA teams left and only one Vic and one SA team left.

Could be an all WA final!

Mind you regardless of who wins(unless Port Adelaide win) it will not determine the strongest league outside AFL. Port Adelaide were 7th or 8th best in SA last year and are currently 6th in the SANFL, so even if they get put out by Claremont the competition proves nothing about the relative strengths of the three leagues.

If I recall correctly wasn't the one and only recent WAFL state league win by a single point, played in WA, and with SA losing their only ruckman in the first quarter.

I agree things are looking up for WA footy, but I think they were coming from a long way behind.

I suspect it still remains that the SANFL and VFL are very similar, with the WAFL closing the gap but not there yet. One of the WAFL sides had a small win over a VFL side but I think the VFL club was playing all their rookies. And yes, the SANFL sides in the Foxtel Cup really are the weakest ones. West Adelaide lost by just 19 points to Williamstown, and bookended that with two thrashing either side in the SANFL against fairly middling fellow SANFL teams. Unfortunately Port and North are also the weaker SANFL sides, so again, the SANFL is handicapping itself by about 10 goals.

I think the SANFL should've asked its clubs "do you ALL agree to be available for this competition?" and if any more than 1 or 2 said no then not enter it. When a WAFL or VFL side wins it I'm quite sure their respective media will not draw attention to the fact the SANFL let its weakest teams compete. So I can only hope that it embarrasses the SANFL into a different approach in 2012 if the Foxtel Cup goes around again.

Don't know if the outcome will embarrass the SANFL in any way. The SANFL had little say in how the comp was to be run and for some of the clubs even if they won it it would be a financial burden.eg sponsorship rights!( let alone risk of injury(chances to win the real prize.eg. SANFL title)) Let's not forget that is the given reason we don't have a real test(state of origin)of who's top state in footy. Also the SANFL didn't want to dictate(all or none) to the clubs because that may have prevented the "destitute" :-) clubs from making a bit of money on the side if they won.eg. Port Adelaide :-)

At the end of the day whichever state's league wins will trumpet themselves as the best, and everyone associated with the SANFL claim they are the best, so I think it will be a bit embarassing if they don't even have a team in the final. WE know the reasons why but it won't look good.

On the flipside if somehow Port Adelaide (the only SANFL rep left) manages to win, well that would be embarrassing for the WAFL and VFL.

Back to Flyinghigh about WA juniors doing so well, I agree they have been, but remember that SA won the NAB AFL U16s last year and I think SA went within a kick of winning the U18s too, and are off to a good start this year including beating Vic Country by 46 points. So SA is not quite ready to give up second spot to WA just yet in terms of strongest overall state (clearly in terms of overall depth Victoria are top, and in a battle with SA in terms of state league strength). But yes WA's faster growing population should see them get to number two sooner rather than later.
