Rory, as you were there you may be able to tell us if it was the NZ Haka or something else?

A brief history from memory on challenge dances in footy (i.e. I have not gone back to check the exact facts so there may be some minor errors);

Over the years at the International Cups - in particular the Pacific nations (including PNG) have performed pre match "challenge" or "war" dances.

At one of the Oceania events or rep teams tours it was decided that there would be a combined "challenge" dance performed by the team before the match. I suspect this is what was performed in Blacktown yesterday.

The indigenous Flying Boomerangs team having seen this up close also got together to create their own version in recent years (incorporating Aboriginal language and cultural references from a number of tribes).

This year the AFL indigenous team was set to use that same dance before they played Richmond in Darwin (which was moved to Alice Springs and then scrapped due to post cyclone storms).

So while it has a short history in our game it has almost moved to be seen at the top level of football in our country. Expect to see more of it in future as crowds and administrators seem to like it.

To me it is much more impressive than having a team run onto the ground through crepe paper will ever be.

The following was written by Flying Boomerangs captain JAY KENNEDY-HARRIS.

My favourite thing we've done here so far, apart from the football, is the war cry that we did as a group. It's something you do to scare the opposition, like the Haka, but this is our own version.

We've been developing that and working on making it better. We started doing it in Sydney on Sunday and then we've progressively developed it so we can do it just before the matches start. It started off really quiet and people thought it was a bit silly but now it's really intense and it's scary just being in it.

The Haka is Maori and hence unique to NZ, but I'm sure that all of Samoa, Tonga,and Fiji have their own "war" dance which they have performed before the start of Rugby matches for many years. Each has their own name, but because we see the Haka more often than any of the others, every body labels them a haka too. I have seen at least a couple of those nations do their "haka", can't recall which ones with certainty tho'.

As for PNG, I also know that many Papuan Tribes would perform a similar "dance" usually shaking spears and banging of shields in an attempt to frighten off the opposing tribe before a battle. I haven't seen(Aussies just don't see PNG sporting events on our TV's) this translated into a "haka" before PNG sporting events tho' but it could well have happened by now.

Rory seems to be too cocooned in Canberra to have seen any of the other nations perform their "haka" at world events :-) Maybe that's a problem with Canberra TV stations? :-)

I'm pretty sure Hawiian men do a similar 'War" dance but I'm usually always watching the women do the Hula, much more interesting! :-)

It's also worth noting there a lot of different hakas, performed on different occasions by different clans from around NZ. The one the All Blacks do is the most famous, but isn't by any stretch the only one.

New Zealand = Haka

Samoa = Sivi Tau
