I think GB management feels that have a more athletic up and coming side than last time, but it is pretty fresh so inexperience may have shown in that last game against NZ who are the best drilled team in international footy.

But in terms of the NZ side being born and bred Kiwis, I can't say for all, but the overwhelming majority are. A lot of guys play Rugby and try Aussie Rules in the off season, and of course some love it and stick with it. So you have a lot of big athletic blokes playing the game. And with the new HANZ UP program there are starting to be a few kids coming through as well - NZ has always had some flow through from juniors.

Really, NZ has been smashing many teams from way back. I remember in 2005 they looked awesome at times.

I just had a quick look at the 2005 results where NZ won it, they beat GB 8.8 to 3.4 in the early rounds, which is a fair bit closer to what we got yesterday.

In the semis, NZ beat the US by only 3 goals, who defeated Ireland into 3rd spot.

If either of Ireland or NZ come up against the US this time around, that will be interesting to see.

But initially, it looks like NZ, PNG and Ireland have moved further ahead of the pack, not sure about Sth Africa, and Nauru are around where they've always been.

South Africa vs USA on Sunday could be interesting. Not sure who to tip. Probably still go with South Africa at this point, but it's worth noting that the USA crunched Japan by more than the Saffers did.

Whoever wins it will go in against one of NZ, PNG and Ireland for a spot int he final... So we may yet see how the USA go against them.

I'm not persuaded that SA are good enough to make the top 2 yet, but I reckon they'll do the job against the US. But you'd have to think on a big stage like ANZ Stadium and given their good form, the US should give a good account of themselves, so you never know.

What worries me about the US though is that they struggled to dispose of Canada, and they crashed to GB, who collapsed against NZ. So if SA is anywhere near NZ that suggests way too good for the US. And note that in some of SA's games I've noted some of their top players not taking the field - they may have been resting them.

You comparison makes some sense, but I would point to a couple of factors for the US.

1. It was the US teams first match together (yes and Canada's too), and having limited practices together they are/were in a sense still feeling it out. They are improving day by day down there.

2. US VS Canada is a Derby and is always played close for the most part. Two big teams that always match up physically.

3. Having lost to the US could have been a HUGE FACTOR psychologically to Canada, in that despite all best efforts the team just couldn't recover and motivate for the GB game. "I'm not saying, i'm just saying..."

Just to show some impartiallity to SA... they played Japan on a much slicker wetter oval and so you would expect the point to be down.

The US has obviously focused on a speedier team than before while not trrying to sacrifice too much strength and size. The upcoming SA match will be the true test of this strategy. In 2008 SA's speed was a telling factor.
