Living in Perth now I have seen just how good these games can be. Sellout crowds with a pre-game and post game atmosphere that beats any finals game. The games are usually good entertainment and serve to raise the profile of both codes if only to give an international standing increasingly required in a global world.

I agree with the points above. The Australian team lack practice, lacked a goalkeeper, lacked experienced players, lacked players with a hard edge usually found in experienced players.There was a lack of promotion and lack of positive sentiment coupled with a poor choice of openning city. Because the series is decided on aggregate(which is always a little strange) we are lumbered with an almost dead rubber. In spite of that, IMO GC will be better from a game and crowd perspective.

On an almost totally different note I wonder what would have happenned if the rules had been designed to include only what was common to the two games. Two goalposts, one boundary, no goalkeeper, can only run x metres/steps, handball and limited bump. Throw in the mark and you have a good recreational game. The IR game is a good bridge between the codes at grassroots level but a stripped down version could be an introduction to people used to the round ball.
