Thank you for posting my interview. I am lucky to have a buck of committed locals to play footy.

With the AFL creating an academy in Guangzhou it is important to gain grassroots local support. Whilst it is has been the expat teams who have pioneered the game we also must find a way of creating more teams of locals and empowering locals to run these teams.

This will make locals feel part of the game more and far more attracted to it. Then when a local recruit from China makes it in Australia this person's success won't fall on deaf ears with locals as they are part of the game or get to see it played in their area. Also with China being one of australia's largest trading partners by focusing on local involvement Australian companies sponsorship exposure here becomes more effective.

This is why NBA has had success with basketball here even though its a sport where you mostly have to be tall. With Footy you can be any height so focusing on grassroots teams and gaining this type of involvement will make the venture into China more successful. Darrell Egan

Glad to hear from you Darrell, we hope to hear from you again in years to come as your efforts bear fruit. Your sentiments about the future of footy resting with fostering the understanding and love of the game hold true worldwide.
