Coming down to Melbourne and playing at the almost invisible Frankston in the VFL - couldn't help to notice his name - then seeing him playing for the VFL down in Tassie in the state game and he looked good enough. And, you look at a club like Carlton who can't manage a forward structure and you just think that Haretuku is cherry ripe to be given a chance now that he's matured a bit more both physically and with his footy.

His would be another fine example for developing (AFL) states that you can make the conversion and not have to be cramming your footy education into 2 years.

The mature age recruiting is something that I'd lamented for years and was what I looked forward to the most from the time that North said no to the Gold Coast and the AFL suddenly announced two brand new clubs. You knew that recruiting would have to change - the main hope now is that this is a permanent change and that when we return to 'fair' drafts that clubs retain the lessons learned of the value of looking for late bloomers and especially the ready to go aspect of guys who have been playing 'mens' footy rather than juniors.

Point here - is that in the US we see baseball with the Major League and the Minors. In AFL - the Minors were pretty well undervalued in favour of the 'elite' TAC pathway. As important as that is - I'm pleased to see the Minor Leagues being recognised again - and providing hope for the local footballer who wasn't in the right place at the right time at age 17.
