I reckon GWS's crowds have been quite reasonable this year. Brand new team, in a town where existing fans will already follow the Swans or another AFL side, and turning up you know they are almost certain to get smashed.

If they can get around 7000 to most matches (not involving Sydney) in 2012, then start to win a few more games in 2013 and get that up around 9000 per game, that's a good start.

I'd also expect more interstate fans to travel once the Giants start to play more competitively and the public realise that their new ground at the showgrounds isn't too far out west.

If they steadily build a following especially amongst kids, which will take 10 to 20 years to yield a significant supporter base, I could see their numbers growing to around 15,000 in 5 years (with plenty of upside beyond that) and that's similar to say North Melbourne when they host a non-Vic side. With a decent stadium deal that might be a break even crowd for GWS. Hopefully by then their twice a year matches against the Swans will be pulling 50,000 at the Olympic stadium.

Imagine any of the existing AFL sides if as the season approached the club said "we've got a brand new squad, you don't know virtually any of the players, we're going to get smashed every week... buy your season tickets now!". That wouldn't sell well. I reckon about year 4 or 5 is the earliest we can tell whether they are on the right trajectory and creating a genuine market. I reckon the only major risk is if the AFL stopped supporting it fully.
