You can see/hear in the footage that the crowd were getting into the game - not a sterile atmosphere. Good stuff.

Did the Islands v Continent match play before a fair crowd or did the crowd only turn up for the AFL exhibition match?

Sorry Cam. No there wasn't a big crowd for the burtain raiser. Most people turned up late during the first quarter of the main match.

How many boxes would you tick(or rate 1-5) with the JLT Allstars Game?

1.Players from all across Europe getting chance to play at higher than normal level.

2.Europe's better players playing on a real oval(tho this one is usually for cricket only).

3.These players getting chance to socialise etc. talk footy with players from many other countries..

4.Players getting rare chance to see footy played at professional level.

5.Europe's better players playing in front of big crowd.

6.Showcasing European Footy to Europe(rather than homesick expats).

7.Match played as curtain raiser achieved more in showcasing European Footy than if played as a companion match to an International Test played some where in mainland Europe. (eg.more spectators actually watching the match)

8.Worth repeating exercise as done this time.

9.Worth repeating but done differently (eg. in conjuction with International Test) (some where in mainland Europe) (not in London elsewhere in UK) ????

10. Not worry about getting large crowds((10000 who didn't watch Europe match anyway))

Over the last few months European Nations have been contesting Rugby World Cup qualifying matches. Slovenia d. Hungary in front of 400 people, Sweden lost to Ukraine in Stockholm-crowd-789, Denmark drew with Andorra in Odense-crowd-500, Luxembourg beat Norway-crowd-700, Germany beat Ukraine in Berlin, massive crowd of 1100. Rugby's history goes back a hellava lot longer than Aussie Rules in that part of the world so holding a test match between say Germany v Great Britain or France v Italy or even Norway v Finland and getting a crowd of a couple of hundred is nothing to sneeze at this stage of development of footy any where in Europe.

Interesting to see crowd numbers for the upcoming 3 test series Nauru v Fiji in Suva and Fiji AFL opinion on how much value is gained showcasing footy in Fiji.

1.Players from all across Europe getting chance to play at higher than normal level. YES - but getting to know your team mates and training at said high level is equally important if you want to bring it out in the game. Plus many top Danish players (all young ~22) had financial problems and couldn't make it.

2.Europe's better players playing on a real oval(tho this one is usually for cricket only). YES - this is very important as most people play 9's in Europe.

3.These players getting chance to socialise etc. talk footy with players from many other countries.. YES- and many are now talking on facebook etc too. Should have heard them after England vs Sweden!!

4.Players getting rare chance to see footy played at professional level. PASS - it was a great game but both teams but their kids out. The top teams are on TV a few times a week.

5.Europe's better players playing in front of big crowd. PASS - the crowd wasn't there for the curtain raiser. Even the local clubs weren't there.

6.Showcasing European Footy to Europe(rather than homesick expats). PASS - See above. However, showcasing AFL to Europeans worked very well. Just bear in mind most sports fans would have been watching the EPL games.

8.Worth repeating exercise as done this time. NO - defo worth repeating but needs some thinking and tailoring to local situation.

9.Worth repeating but done differently (eg. in conjuction with International Test) (some where in mainland Europe) (not in London elsewhere in UK) ???? YES - not on a day when two London EPL teams have home games for starters. Get bigger teams with more interest in International development, play for points.

10. Not worry about getting large crowds((10000 who didn't watch Europe match anyway)) - NO - marketing and organisation are powerful tools at everyone's disposal. NFL is in a similar situation, maybe a bit further ahead but only because of their successfull marketing campains. They played at Wembly a few weeks prior to this and it was packed out.

I can quite see Aussie Rules taking rugby over in the non-rugby nations. It's more fun to play and apart from the World Cup (which most of them won't qualify for) to most Europeans it's a slightly different oval ball game invented by English speaking people (no offence to Welsh, French or Indigenous Aussies intended). They may as well play a sport they have a competitive chance at, and practically anyone can play for their country, you don't need to be a superstar.

Thanks Tobi for your comments, helps us back here in OZ get a bit of an idea of how somebody who is working at developmental level over there has percieved the whole exercise.

By the way when I suggested the Europe match be played in conjunction with an International Test I meant Footy Test (eg Germany v Sweden or France v Italy, at 16-a-side etc.) not a cricket Test. A crowd of a couple of hundred Swedes, Italians or Frenchmen watching would be just as valuable as the few hundred that watched the match this time, yes, no??????
