Call me a soccer girl but I blame the draft system, not the teachers (who probably work hard enough!). AFL clubs don't need to invest money into grassroots footy cos they already get to pick the best kids that come out of it, and there's no guarantee that any money they do put into young players will come back to them. In the UK's sports scene, the sunday league clubs don't have to do the legwork in local schools because EPL teams like Man Utd do it for them. They have massive grassroots investment, child talent scouts and youth development teams. Rugby is exactly the same. And when your sports hero comes to your school and teaches you how to play the game, you're hooked!
