Demetriou vague on Australian football\'s international future

I think part of the confusion/vagueness is caused by the AFL insisting in calling itself AFL, the football code AFL, and the world Ruling body AFL, and the League (geelong, collingwood etc)AFL.

People who play soccer/football do not play FIFA., They play foootball(if ya believe Les Murray :-) ) people who play for Melbourne Heart do not play FIFA.

The people that play rugby all over the world don't play IRB they play Rugby.

I played for Elizabeth North Football Club (pretty badly I admit) I played Australian Football or Aussie Rules, I never played AFL, Axel Bang from Denmark has not played AFL (yet) but he has played Aussie Rules and he's pretty good at it by all accounts.

All the kids tearing around my local oval tomorrow will not be be playing AFL ( altho the Australian press and media and even the Australian Football community will say they are. Absurd isn't' Gary Ablett and little Harry Blogs both play AFL !! Yeah Right !!! Harry plays Aussie Rules, Gary plays in the AFL.

If Demetriou happens to mention that AFL wiil not become an international Sport, which 'AFL' is he actually talking about?

Actually Australian Rules Football/ Australian Football/ Aussie Rules/Footy is already an international Sport, it is played in about 40-50 countries across all continents and many of the countries that it is played in, have played international matches against other Aussie Footy playing nations (about 25 nations have played at least 4 internernational matches).

Demetriou is correct tho' AFL(the league) is not and will not be intenational until they get that NZ team(with at least a few Kiwis playing in it) playing in the league(AFL).

Of course as soon as Demetriou says some thing like that then all the Victoria centric xenophobes in footy and the Aussie Footy haters( Les Murray's of the world) will jump on the band wagon and say "told ya so, Australian Football will never be an international sport."

There! Had My Gripe!!! :-)

IMO the reporter is doing the usual by trying to create something out of nothing on a speech tailored to American guests. It's a pretty ordinary sumation of where Australian Football is at, with remarks directed at the league rather than Australian Football in general. Indeed would it be appropiate to rabbit on about all the possibilities that AFL is chasing ATM.?The analogy with the NFL is reasonably close. The NFL is bigger and has a higher profile overseas but lets not forget that AFL has also had good crowds overseas and probably is played more widely.Obviously guests would be interested in the high profile possibilities not grassroots.

The original article is a strange piece of journalism in that it only quotes one person. Considering how important Demetriou is and implications of what he's saying, you think they'd either have someone backing it up or alternatively, someone from say the Hawks or the Swans contesting it.

Regardless of Demitriou's intentions and the stir it's caused, if he means it, so be it. He won't be around forever and if the game grows significantly in the interim, his replacement will be sure to change his tune. Therefore best thing we can do is now worry so much about who says what and instead focus on promoting our own game and getting new players and fans involved.
