Since this article was posted, more information has been sent by Matt Burn (General Manager - Football Operations AFL Middle East) with comments from Ali's own club. It reads:

Ali Al Hosani became the first Emirati to play Aussie Rules in the Middle East on November 8, 2013 for the Abu Dhabi Falcons. The fleet-footed Falcon played in the forward line against much larger opponents from the Dubai Dragons but impressed everyone with his speed and agility. Ty Farrell from the Abu Dhabi Falcons said the club "is very proud to have the leagues first Emirati player and will continue to encourage all nationalities to play our great game in the Middle East".

As a local Ali could well be vital in the development of footy in Abu Dhabi. The value of a local running (or helping at) an Auskick/footykick clinic in schools would be almost immeasurable in the region. Maybe AFL Middle East and Falcons could kick in with a stipend (to cover his expenses) as is done in South Africa.
