I some times wonder if it all really comes down to the actual mindset of the AFL (the league) when it comes to these sort of events. Has the AFL set the priorities in what they are attempting to do in the correct order. eg. is the number one Highest priority promoting AFL (the code) internationally with the ultimate aim to have more and more countries/people taking up the sport or does that sit a little below showcasing AFL (the league) to the world, (but with the expected audience being enough expat Aussies to pay for the event in a couple of years) with the inherit difference in expected outcomes the AFL (the League) is hoping for.

The AFL (the League) tends to (I think) measure the success of the venture on the number of spectators they get rather than the number of people who go home from the match with the idea that they are going to start/join a local club and play footy, and/or think that was great, so next time I'll drag some of my mates along.

Consequently when the crowds don't meet expectations after a couple of efforts the mindset seems to become " OH damm that didn't work, didn't make any money out of that, so let's not do that again".

I guess 'Half-hearted' could be one way to describe how the AFL goes about these events, (too) High expectations aren't met, so deemed not a success so call it off after only a couple of times before any more time and effort (and money) is wasted.

History tends to support this. eg. only one exhibition match played in China, played only one exhibition match in London when those matches were "restarted". AIS/AFL v European Titans matches in Europe stopped after only two attempts. Was that a decision made by AFL (the League) and whyω

You're right Brett, investments made with expectations of a quick return so often turn out to be 'too good to be true' and many get punters get burnt. Does footy mirror lifeω

The real reward almost always comes after many years of Hard Yakka!!!
