To Kurt's comments, yes that was an important innovation last time that meant new nations could test themselves against the best (as some bravely or naively state they want) without the carnage lasting too long and the players maintaining some morale.

If you look back to IC08 I believe China played 3 full pool matches without scoring a single point. If I recall correctly there were some disenchanted players and angry officials.---

Actually the highest ranked and lowest ranked nations in each group do not meet in the first three rounds. Not sure if by accident or by design, however very sensible, thus avoiding those match-ups where "the carnage would last too long" despite some "bravely or naively saying that is what they want".

Let's hope that the AFL(world ruling body)has actually done this with the overall "look of the competition" in mind.

There will still be some "lofty blow outs" but not as extreme as have happened in past IC's I think.

Some big margins are a symptom of having teams of such diverse abilities playing together. Other sports where the best get together eg. World Football Cup, Rugby World Cup etc. the minnows don't even get into the finals. Mind you I saw Australia give Namibia an absolute thrashing in Adelaide at a Rugby World Cup match a few years ago, and Namibia was ranked in the top 20 or so at the time.

Round 1 has only 2 match-ups that countries ranking points will change but Round 2 has only 3 matches where ranking points won't change (Rating gap > 10) Round 3 will see all nations ranking points change (all rating gaps < 10)

I'm actually a little bit hopeful that the competition won't have many blow-out matches this time around. By saying this I hope I'm not invoking Mr Murphy to slap me about :-) too much.
