What is it about Australian Rules football that we love?

The simple answer is that Australian Football is attractive and unique in it is the only sport that uses a ball specifically for kicking accurately over long distances. A kicked ball travels fastest. Fast transferences of the ball, catching the ball, optimum scoring and the physicality produce an attractive game to watch and minimum rules attracts people to play.
Looking deeper I was privy to watching the most attractive football. West Australian grounds are large and firm. WAFL clubs played an open kick passing game, using the drop kick and stab pass. There is probably nothing more beautiful than watching a well executed drop kick. The Subiaco fullback could drop kick the ball from kick-out to the centre of Subiaco Oval. Probably the best rover to watch was Barry cable with his balance and short pass stab kicks. It was the time of fast leading full forwards that kicked accurately and a time when ruckmen were ruckmen and rovers existed. Yes, Victoria had the incredible pack mark but generally the game was much slower on heavy grounds.
The game has continued to evolve and become more utilitarian. The attractiveness to watch has been reduced a little but the attractiveness to play has been greatly enhanced. The use of the drop punt has allowed newcomers a much easier path to participating. Positions no longer exist. Players are free to roam and contribute either by attacking of defending. There is always something for the modern player to be doing. As long as clubs play attacking football, Australian Football will continue to be an attractive game, without the stoppages of some codes, or restrictions of others but with the right physicality.
