Curious about this quote:

"in 2012 we lost Lugano Bankers (they quit playing AFL 9 per side)..."

Did they just fold or did they only want to play 18 per side? But presumably no opposition so did they just folded rather than play 9s?

Or maybe I'm reading too much into it and it's a little "lost in translation" and they simply folded?

Always sad to see a backward step from 4 to 2 clubs. Although forwards in terms of involvement at a wider European level. Hopefully the 2 new teams will eventuate and one day we'll see the old teams reform for a 6 team league. Sounds like the enthusiasm is there, but hard to improve too much without regular local matches.

I wondered about that statement too, Brett.

I've got it written in my "compendium" that they originally were playing at 12-a-side. Have to agree that it is sad to see a drop off of numbers that we see here. 4 teams at 12-a-side down to 2 at 9-a-side.
Looks a bit like another case where costs to play inter-city matches and the lack of frequent regular matches has had an effect.

They say they've about 20 guys training at the moment, maybe they could hold a "draft" (as done in Glasgow a while back) and then play a weekly three team 6-a-side intra-city season. Everybody gets a game as well as the training they are doing now.

That way those extra half doz players who don't actually go to Holland (either because only 15 can play, or 'cos can't afford it or can't get away that particular week) have all played matches and don't consequently lose interest and are lost to the game.

Months of training to play just one or two matches a year/season will not retain the blokes who have just come out to give it a go with their mates. That's OK for the 'fanatics'.

Playing regular(weekly or fortnightly) matches with about 3 or 4 teams (not playing against same old faces each time) seems to be a very important step in the development and growth of footy in other parts of the world, helps keep the non-committed and curious interested, hopefully until they become part of the committed.
