One area that has always left me confused is the promotion of overseas video. We all know the story of football exploding in North America when ESPN was looking for content to sell their PayTV. Then mainstream sport took over and it's fair to say that from then on you had to search for any AFL content on PayTV and the numerous people criticized the AFL for their apparent lack of ability to get AFL more widely visible overseas.The AFL, at the same time has had an eye to the future with digital technology. The result is that we all have access to a very reasonably priced streaming service. It is well within the means of every club to watch every AFL game which is a big step forward but it is still "preaching to the converted". It is not driving new admirers. However there now exists an excellent opportunity to put international football on a secure footing. It would be extremely simple matter to return a percentage of monies earned overseas to the development of football overseas. This could even be fine tuned down to the country of origin if required.
