Hi Ian, by the strict western interpretation of uncles/cousins you are correct but by the cultural kinship connections of the Tiwi people they are referred to as uncles/cousins. It is not a kinship framework unique to indigenous Australians, but certainly here in northern Australia we have adopted a looser, or perhaps better termed wider, interpretation of kinship. It is interesting that here in Cairns there have been many kids I have coached who are Andrew McLeod's cousin or nephew on that same basis.

It would be culturally insensitive to simply assume the western version, so have opted for the broader terminology.
