You got to hand it to Collingwood for there Foresight and expansion of Collingwood Football club into the North American market.

Technically they are too late ...

Matthew (aka Sanford) Wheeler played for the Sydney Swans in the late 1980's. He was Australian bred, however was American born. In fact he was the first African-American born to play in the AFL (though it was the VFL back then). His mother was African-American and his father was Australian. They all lived together in Australia.

I played junior footy with him in Sydney - his mother and father were always at the matches. His father went on to coach at senior level in the Sydney Football League (which is now AFL Sydney).

Matthew never really made it as a regular player, and I don't know what happened to him. His father was last seen by me coaching in the mid-90's.
