Good to see you back contributing, Wes. Knew you couldn't stay away, ha! ha!
You ponder, in your article, whether your girls v boys match played so far away (some 3000 kms) from footy's 'heartland' has any relevance beyond the local level and is it measurable.
Quite frankly the answer is YES and immeasurable, especially at state and international levels. If we take a look at what is happening in world footy, eg. Innovation even further away from the 'heartland', such as 9-a-side footy (started in the America's and in Europe), In-door 6-a-side (in places such as Sweden and Denmark and elsewhere snow bound), mixed gender matches (currently played in Switzerland I believe, and in schools and universities in Canada (Calgary, Edmonton, Newfoundland and very recently in Saskatchewen), also occasionally else where such as in France, USA and Columbia I believe. There were some 'Mixed' matches at the recent US Nationals I seem to recall.
All this occuring with no one checking if it is OK at the 'heartland' :-) I know I'm getting long in the tooth but I can remember when the VFA was considered as 'heritics' because they played with only 16-a-side :-)
We all talk about the boom in Women's Footy that has occurred in the last half dozen or so years and it it is terrific to see and watch right thru from grassroots to the AFLW, but we should not forget that there was a women's competition in Ontario, Canada back in the early 2000's, a long long way away from footy's 'Heartland'.
So Wes, keep up the good work and plug away at what you're doing up there in the Sunshine State because it is vitally important to the WORLD of Australian Football.
