OPINION: AFLW ban for 2020 AFL International Cup

Very reasoned opinion piece I think from someone apparently close to AFL Women's footy.

Mr Holden suggests that the Irish semi-professional AFLW players play an semi-professional indigenous AFLW team instead of playing the amateurs at the IC as a solution to banning them from the IC and I personally support this suggestion and much if not almost all of what he has written here.

I would like to point out another area where more of the current semi-professional AFLW players could be able to play at an "quasi-international" level and still have matches where the match-up is pretty even.

I suggest that the "Emeralds" could "tour" Australia playing semi-professional AFLW teams from the "weaker" (don't like that word) developing states, eg. Queensland, NSW & NT (making sure that these teams are truly state-of origin of course).

I also wonder if there are enough English, American, Canadian and other nationalities semi-professional AFLW players currently playing in Aussie to put together a "Rest of the World" team to join the "tour". (having to ring in a few amatuers to make up a full squad wouldn't do any harm to possible future recruitment either).

IF not a "tour" as such but a short round robin tournament held after the conclusion of the AFLW season (before these 'international' players go home) is another possibility I think. Maybe a tournament where two foreign teams each play off against two local "state" teams.

Could be played over two weekends (double header matches) and don't have to play a Grand Final. Overall winner determined by using a ranking scheme. (Would have to be a new seperate scheme from our WFN scheme tho.)

And if we can accept that the future of International Footy as far as Women's AFL is concerned is not Australia v other countries but other countries versus all the states and territories becoming the Women's Footy World. (Let's face it, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland all play as seperate nations in World Rugby and World Soccer(football) at all levels and genders). So why can't the AFL Women's world develop along this path right from this time onwards.
