Tuohy to trial with Blues

Zac Tuohy today confirmed that he will be heading to Melbourne for a trial with the Carlton Football Club. The Irish Independent reports that the Portlaoise clubman has slightly delayed his departure so that he can play with his Gaelic football club against Stradbally in the opening round of the Laois senior football championship.

"I'm going out there to Carlton on a trial basis," said Tuohy. "I was supposed to be going over on Saturday but I have delayed it because of the Stradbally game. I think I will be going over after that," he concluded. This comes just weeks after Michael Shields departed the Blues to return to Ireland.

I'm wondering if the two Irishmen trialling with Adelaide will return home thinking the weather Down Under, supposedly a drawcard, is worse than Ireland. After years of drought and mild winters, it has barely stopped raining since they arrived, even dropping below zero on one occasion. No doubt they're being told "it isn't normally like this" but that's what everyone says when the weather turns bad. Not that they'd probably appreciate some of the 43+ degree days we get each summer either - ahh, pre-season in summer.

Having said that about the rain, no the major water issues facing the state and the River Murray have not abated. It will take a few years of above average rainfall to restore the reservoirs and most of the rain is not in the Murray catchment further inland. In fact it has now been declared that there will be no water passed down from the upper Murray-Darling states (Vic, NSW, Qld) to save the wetlands at the Murray mouth (which has required dredging for years to keep it open), and one government official has conceded that if things continue this way fish (and possibly bird species) will become extinct - they have already collected some in tanks to try to save them. It's the kind of environmental degradation we used to see from some of the old Communist countries and we thought would never happen in a wealthy western democracy like ours. I think I might have gone off track from the footy there....
