Australian Rules football has slowly begun to spread around the world, particularly gaining momentum in the last decade. But the development of the game outside of Australia partly depends on the strength of the game within. The sport has a long history in Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory in Australia. This weekend sees the first ever AFL premiership season match played there.

The NT has produced more than their fair share of AFL players, especially Aboriginal stars, and many wish the Territory had it's own AFL side. Unfortunately the small population and different weather patterns make that dream unlikely to be realised for the forseeable future. But it is good to see the AFL has begun staging games there, with the Western Bulldogs playing Port Adelaide on Saturday night (August 14th).
