Greece have won the Australian Football Multicultural Cup for 2005, defeating traditional rivals Turkey by 14 points in the final. Eight sides, representing Melbourne's Croatian, Turkish, Greek, Vietnamese, Italian, Israeli, Lebanese and Aboriginal communities were on show, with the day held in great spirits in keeping with Harmony Day.

On a good day for football, a crowd of around 2,300 witnessed some strong displays from football sides representing Melbourne's multicultural communities.

Over the course of the day, the Greek and Turkish sides dominated their preliminary round matches, no opposition side reaching a double figures score.

After a tight final, the Greeks were deserved winners on the day.

Ex-AFL players competing included Sedat Sir (Western Bulldogs) for Turkey, Brent Grgic (Melbourne/Geelong) for Croatia and the trio of Athos Hyroulakis (Collingwood), John Rombotis (Fitzroy/Richmond) and James Condon (Western Bulldogs) pulling on the jumper for Greece. Stephen Alessio (Essendon) coached the Italian side.

A highlight of the day was attendance by Mr Football, Ron Barassi, who presented the winners' trophy to the Greek side.
