For some reason St Kilda's tour of South Africa last year caused more attention on world Aussie Rules than just about any other event. Even the Pacific edition of Time Magazine has recently run a story.
In Learning to Play by Australian Rules, the March 21st 2005 article discusses the Saints' tour and the enthusiasm shown by all the kids. Story author Simon Robinson discusses the hopes for footy to be a bridge across the racial divide, and talks with Mtutuzeli Hlomela, the South African player who first got a taste for Australian Rules Football when unexpectedly getting a scholarship to play in South Australia with the Sturt Football Club.
