Recent AFL Commissioner Colin Carter has returned to a position on the board of the Geelong Football Club. He left Geelong in 1993 to join the AFL Commission, serving there until early 2008. Amongst more widely known activities such as the report "Establishing the basis of future success" (adopted by the original VFL commission in 1985 as its strategy for competition equalization, ground rationalization and growing the national competition), Carter is also regarded as a key driver who pushed the AFL towards greater international involvement.
In particular he is thought to have been a strong voice for the AFL supporting the game in South Africa. Upon departing the AFL Commission after 15 years, Carter was reported as saying that in his own personal view, he'd like to see an AFL team from South Africa one day.
Perhaps strangely Geelong's links to the international game did not extend to being one of the four AFL teams that took up a province in South Africa (those clubs instead being West Coast, Fremantle, Collingwood and Carlton). However they have given support to Denmark and have growing connections to AFL South Africa through the company of Cats President Frank Costa. The return of Carter could only increase those links, and it's pleasing to see that he has not been lost to football.
Denmark play South Africa at St Mary's in Geelong at 12pm Saturday August 30th in their third round International Cup clash.
