USA tennis star Andy Roddick, in Melbourne for the Australian Open was given some Aussie Rules tips by Richmond AFL stars. The AFL players also joined a round of tennis too and apparently impressed. The mutual publicity stunt achieved some good coverage in Melbourne.

The Herald Sun featured the story in the article Andy Roddick handy, but Tigers are ace.

The marketing departments of the clubs are often going all out this time of year to get their guys in the sports pages. And being that this next fortnight is pretty much dominated in Melbourne by the tennis, what better way than to link up a footy shot with a tennis international. You never know, if you wander around Flinders Park with a tennis racquet and a dodgy accent you might be presented with a jumper too.

You're right, is a bit sad really ....

This year in particular the clubs seem pretty desperate. I guess they realise the predicament they are in with the financial crisis. Its not just celebrity coattails they're hanging off. There is even some product placement going on. I noticed that the Demons publicised their new captain on the new ferris wheel in Melbourne. I wonder what sort of kickbacks the club got for that !
