General News

In August 2011 the International Cup will be staged in Sydney and Melbourne, and one proven way for representative players to improve their skills is to play for an Australian club, with all the week after week of high standard training and playing. It worked wonders for many of the Nauruan players in 2008, as well as players from other countries.

Now the Coolangatta Australian Football Club in south-east Queensland is offering eligible international players the same chance in 2011. The following offer is from Scott Reid, President of Coolangatta. He has been one of the key men behind the re-birth of Papua New Guinean footy over the last decade, so he his knowledge of international Australian football is both deep and realistic.

WE WANT YOU:  Prepare for IC2011 playing AFL on the Gold Coast.

It is an International Cup year and players from all around the world will be planning their preparation and tour for the Cup. If you are expecting to be coming to Australia and playing in the Cup this year have you ever thought about preparing by playing footy on Australia’s famous Gold Coast? Why not play for some or all of AFL season 2011 with Coolangatta AFC?

Coolangatta Footy Club is celebrating its 50th year in 2011 and we would like players from all round the world to celebrate with us. We want players who will be in the IC2011 to play with us during some or all of the 2011 Season.

Coolangatta has 3 senior teams playing in the AFL Queensland competitions, so there is a good range of football. Our Seniors and Reserves play in the AFLQ Pineapple Cup while we also have a team in the Byron Bay based Summerland AFL competition. The AFL Season starts in March and runs until the end of September.

"Coolie" has the best surf and beaches in Australia and is a tourism hub so there is plenty of casual work, cheap accommodation and food options in the local area. We will expect you to meet your own travel costs including airfare and visas but if you are keen and your visa allows it we can help with local connections to find cheap accommodation, food and casual work. We can also give some visa advice if required. Obviously all countries visa conditions to enter Australia differ. Coolangatta is the best place in Australia to play footy and experience the Australian beach culture, so if you’re keen and can play a bit then get in touch.

Scott Reid is President of Coolangatta and is on email at scott [dot] reid [at] minterellison [dot] com. Please send an email noting your country, interest in travelling and Australian football experience.
