Interesting to see that NSW, without being a traditional footy state (excepting the Riverina area, which in women's footy plays in the Canberra league and is represented at these champs by the ACT) was well ahead of the Tasmanians. Apparently the Tasmanians, as well as the South Australians, have been relative latecomers to women's footy, despite it being the traditional number 1 sport for men in those states.

Women's footy in SA was in a terrible state just 5 years ago. Traditionally SA participation rates for males is above all others I believe, but for females, the women's comp had just 4 teams. That was when Victoria had many divisions and even Queensland was way ahead. The SA team would get smashed at the Nationals.

A big review was done, I think my Jenny Williams, daughter of Fos and sister of the Port Adelaide Williams boys, and an athlete herself. So it's been very pleasing to see the number of teams finally grow (6 this year) and apparently 1000s of girls and dedicated girls leagues starting to bridge the gap between mixed sex juniors and seniors.

The women are still finding the Nats tough, but based on the scores there has been a lot of improvement in the last few years. Glad to see there is now a pathway that my daughter can follow one day if she chooses (that's a few years away yet).
