WAFL powerhouse Claremont has claimed the 2012 Foxtel Cup, going one better than their runners-up finish in 2011.
The match was played in Perth at Patersons Stadium on Thursday night and Claremont jumped VFL side Werribee to take a good early lead before the visitors fought back to trail by just 9 points at the first break. The third quarter proved decisive with the home side booting four goals to none and never looked back, running out easy 44 point victors.
The Foxtel Cup sees the best state league clubs from around Australia invited to compete in the competition designed for Foxtel cable TV. The inaugural 2011 tournament was won by VFL club Williamstown. The ongoing sour note for the series has been the refusal of the best SANFL clubs to compete, citing lack of sufficient prize money and a focus on their local premiership. But this appears to be more damaging to the SANFL brand than the Foxtel Cup. International footy fans will be hoping to one day see an international side invited to join, but the logistics would be daunting, especially given the limited money on the table and high travel costs.
