In regard to the last sentence in your comment Michael, I fear it is a very faint hope. I am pessimistic about most things the AFL does with the promotion and support given to world footy. Just hope I'm proved wrong here, hey!

The dilemma is the players are (rightfully) seeking to improve their cut. The AFL is running the league and the game - a bit of a conflict there.
The players often come out with the old cliché of they being the ones who put on the show and so deserve the money. I contest that though - it is the clubs, including Melb est 1858, Geelong, even North (est 1869) - clubs that are around 150-160 years old that put on the show - - and they contract talent to represent them.
If the players alone were so great then we'd still have State of Origin.
The challenge is for our footy media to adapt now to the AFLW in addition to the mens. If they can handle that then the might have matured enough to see the International Cup for what it is rather than be blinded by what it isn't.

And I even contest that it's even the AFL clubs that make the game work. It's the sport and everyone who has played it, promoted it, supported it and volunteered at clubs and leagues to run them, and I mean all the clubs and leagues, perhaps least of all the AFL clubs that just benefit at the top. If the players didn't play there are 1000s more lining up that want to.

The key is they deserve a bit more given it's short career for most but you can't demand a fixed percentage of revenue from your employer, and if they do then every time the AFL get a windfall that could be spent on game development the players will swallow a big chunk.

But yes I had been thinking that the AFL have shown they really can promote in creative ways something that is not previously their bread and butter and perhaps this shows the way for them for the IC. Also hoping maybe the players association and more directly the women players could get on board the IC as they know what it's like, previously, to fight for some coverage and support.
