North America USFooty got at great write up for the 2008 National Championships last Friday in the paper local to where the event will be held. The Colorado Springs Independent ran the article following the USAFL’s launch and media briefing in Colorado Springs last week at The Penrose House. It explains why the date has not yet been locked in and throws in some nice self deprecating humor about their own town, which shows how in tune the locals already may be with the Aussie wavelength.

The tournament will be held at the Cadet Athletic Fields at the United States Air Force Academy, with the final date to be announced following the release of the Air Force Football schedule in March. The event will fall on either the second or third weekend in October, opposite a home USAFA home game.

The 2008 footy season is starting to get underway across the US (particularly in the warmer parts). The Arizona AFL kicks off their league this Saturday 16th Feb at McQueen Park in Gilbert. The metro league is made up of three teams selected at last week’s preseason draft. The teams this year will be the Marshals captained by Darren Toohey, the Devils captained by Adam Smark and appearing for the first time and playing in the Arizona Hawks strips are the Kingsnakes, captained by Joe Swierupski. The season opener will be between the Marshals and the Devils.

The Atlanta Australian Rules Football League kicks off this weekend with Roswell Rebels taking on the Midtown Bombers. The match will take place from 10.30am at Dekalb Memorial Park opening the Spring season. The league was founded in 2003, and is entering into it's sixth year of action. The Midtown Bombers have won the last two titles and will once again be hard to beat. For many of the teams this will be their second match for the year after the Kookaburras played the US Revolution team last weekend.

North America AFANA has advised that US footy coverage of the AFL 2008 season will commence this Saturday morning 16th February on Setanta with the Brisbane v Essendon match at 4:30 AM EST. For those new to watching footy in North America we recommend that you regularly check back with AFANA and/or subscribe to their newsletter for regular comprehensive updates on the coverage and program schedules.

The following is from the AFANA site: This is the first time ever that fans in North America have had any coverage of the preseason competition. Setanta has indicated to AFANA that they plan similar coverage for the rest of 2008 as we had in 2007. Setanta may cover up to 4 matches per week if schedule space permits. Initially, only 3 are scheduled for Round 1 of the AFL season.

AFANA has been monitoring the situation with ITVN closely. They remain "on the net" (or "on the air" if you will) and the Setanta feed continues however ITVN is no longer taking any new subscribers. Until recently, we had been able to maintain an e-mail dialogue with them and felt assured that the "reorganization" meant they might survive. However, it's now been some weeks since we have heard anything and they have not indicated whether the funds owed AFANA will be paid soon, if at all. Accordingly, if we don't hear from them shortly we will be disabling the links to them until such time as the situation changes.

Revolution in Atlanta for training camp

North America

Editor: USFooty's Revolution headed to Atlanta for their second training camp of the year last weekend. The following report courtesy of Chris Adams at our partner news site, usfootynews.com. Chris will continue to provide stories for the international readership on worldfootynews.com, as well as working on the dedicated United States website.

The Revos have three training camps planned before they head to Melbourne for the Australian Football International Cup, one camp in each region of the US. The Western training camp was in Los Angeles a few weeks ago. The Central training camp is this weekend in Atlanta. The Eastern traning camp will be April 12 as part of the Fort Lauderdale Spring Tournament at the new Broward County Cricket Stadium. The Fort Lauderdale camp will be the last opportunity for hopefuls to impress the coaches and USFooty plans to name their squad for Melbourne soon after the last training camp.

AFANA is still looking for a couple more writers to add to their team covering the AFL for the North American audience. In particular they need Adelaide and Sydney-based staff. They can organise AFL accreditation and the position offers an excellent chance for a budding young journalist to get some experience.

Last year, this weekend saw AFL teams North Melbourne and the Sydney Swans at UCLA as part of the G’day USA festival. This year however, the match was replaced by an Australia vs England cricket match featuring Steve Waugh alongside Russell Crowe and Mel Gibson taking on Robbie Williams, Simon Jones and Daniel Radcliffe (who Carlton assure us is a fan of the Old Dark Navy Blues).

Sufficient funding was unable to be raised to get AFL clubs back to LA this year (see LA Clash off the Agenda).

Regardless, the USAFL, who played a Revolution v All comers game as the curtain raiser in 2007, were back in LA as part of the preparations for this year’s International Cup. Last year it was the UCLA grounds, but for this year's clash the grounds at Katella High School in Anaheim were used.

Falcons' American experiment - year two

North America

On the 19th of November 2007 the West Perth Falcons of the Western Australian Football League entered the second year of their international experiment with two brothers, Americans James and Jared Brunmeier. While a number of AFL clubs have looked to Ireland, the Falcons looked across the Pacific and found two Wisconsin boys. The Brunmeier brothers went to the Falcons November 2006 as part of an exchange program with the Milwaukee Bombers. They completed a full pre-season with the team and then a full season with the club. Both boys played reserves games throughout the year and made a major impression on the coaching staff and the club. Now they've been invited back for more.

While the NFL focus for many Aussies this year has been on Graham, Rocca and McBriar, it is a different kind of Aussie export to the NFL bringing big results for the locals. NFL rookie Daniel Sepulveda has credited the Aussie Rules drop punt for shoring up his punting game which has lead him to be named as the Joe Greene Great Performance Award for the team’s most outstanding rookie with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the article Sepulveda wins Steelers rookie honor on the Steelers' website, Sepulveda said "I knew in Waco one of the things I needed to work on, my most glaring weakness, was getting the ball inside the 20…It was during my senior year that I made the switch to the Australian rules football kick, the Aussie kick, but that kick has been awesome for me. I can go out there with 100 percent confidence that I will be able to hang it up there and get the guy to fair catch it inside the 20. We have had some success doing that this year and it’s been good."
