Revos head to Florida

North America

This weekend sees the third of the Revolution’s three weekends of training and selection. The final weekend for the Revo’s selection involves a number of games against some of the best players in USFooty. The Revos will be at the Faststream Florida Tournament and has matches lined up against a team made up of players from the BW Eagles, Florida, the New York Magpies and the Denver Bulldogs. They have two games, the first on Saturday and the second on Sunday.

Assistant Coach, Jason Becker, says that the squad for Australia will be named in some form at the end of the weekend. “Many candidates are well known and the selection committee has a good understanding of their games. Other guys are newer on the scene,” says Becker. “While we'll be taking a look at everyone, and everyone will have a chance to shine by doing good things on the field, we'll need to focus a little extra on the guys who haven't made it to all the selectors' radar yet. But, in general, it's the one last chance for each guy to show what he can do. It's all about finding out who can play footy.”

An interesting story appeared recently in the Herald Sun about Bobby Cunningham, a 193cm, 108kg native of Brooklyn, New York talking about his love of the Australian game and his plans to play for the Russell's Creek Football Club in the Warrnambool and District Football League. Cunningham came to Australia to play basketball but was soon hooked on North Melbourne and when many would be retiring from sport, he's starting afresh.

North America Colorado Springs has been the confirmed venue for the 2008 USAFL National Championships for some time now. In fact never before has the league given so much advance warning of the venue. The date however has been up in the air until now. Ironically up in the air due to the US Air Force Academy Falcons who use the facility for their home games. The draw for their 2008 season has just been released which has allowed USFooty to confirm October 11th and 12th as the dates for this year’s championships (when the Falcons are playing away).

The announcement on the USFooty website includes “The event is the biggest Australian Football tournament in the world, and will attract 1,000 American/Australian players, officials and coaching staff, with a total of 32 men’s teams spread across four divisions, as well as up to 6 women’s teams. The tourney in Colorado Springs will also feature a national netball event in conjunction with the football championships.”

New boys St John's are 2008 USFooty College Champs

North America

It was March Madness in the US and we were following the performances of the best of the best in College footy, that’s right, footy! While most Americans were watching the Sweet Sixteen and the Elite Eight (the US National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball finals), Vanderbilt University was hosting the USFooty National Collegiate Championship. The tourney brought together some of the best college footy programs in the country including Vandy, North Carolina, and St John's (MN).

UNC – Chapel Hill, not only has one of the best basketball programs in the country it also has one of the best footy programs. The Tar Heels have been competing for a number of years against the arch-rival NC State and the “old-boys” of the North Carolina Tigers. Vandy is a relative young club with a lot of ambition. Many ‘Dores represent the Kangaroos in the MAAFL. The St John's “Johnnies” are the new kids on the block but they have talent to spare making a large portion of the 2007 Division II National Championship winning Minnesota Freeze. The Johnnies include many former Yankaroos - St John's students studying at Notre Dame in Western Australia and going through a footy program supported by the WAFL's South Fremantle.

In 2006 the Eagles won the Division II National Championship, so the expectations were high for 2007 but even the most optimistic predictions weren’t for as well as their 2007 went. They finished 7-1 with their only loss to the eventual champions the Denver Bulldogs. The Eagles were ranked number 3 in the final World Footy News Poll. Their number 3 finish was spoofed in a YouTube viral video made for the Eagles' 2007 Awards Night.

The $US 70m complex was completed in November 07 and this will be the first time that it has seen competitive footy. The tournament will see some of the best matches that we will see before Nationals in Colorado.

The tourney will be the 2008 debut for 2007 National Champions, the Denver Bulldogs, the number 4 team in the country (by our reckoning) the New York Magpies and the number 3 Baltimore Washington Eagles. Taking on 3 of the top 4 USFooty teams will be hosts, the Florida Redbacks (combined with the Fort Lauderdale Fighting Squids). This will also be the final trial for the US Revolution as the coaching staff looks to get the team ready for the AFL International Cup in Melbourne and Warrnambool.

WA Country takes on US intern

North America

WA Country Football has been at the forefront of developing relationships between the US and Australian football communities. In 2007, WA Country had two representatives at the USFooty Nationals including General Manager Cameron Knapton. WA Country has also worked closely with USFooty’s Tony Fairhead to place St John University “Johnnies” in country footy teams after they finish their footy bootcamp while on exchange to Notre Dame University in Perth WA. Now they're taking things one step further, with an off-field role for an American student.
