North America In a huge development the Dallas Magpies 2012 USAFL Nationals title has been stripped and the title vacated. That means New York will not be awarded the title despite the league ruling Dallas played an ineligible player. Dallas will also be unable to compete in their home state National Championships in 2013 which will be held in Austin, TX.

The USAFL has concluded an investigation in relation to Dallas Magpie Jason Sutherland’s participation at the 2012 USAFL National Tournament and it was found that Jason was ineligible to participate with the Dallas Magpies at this year’s Nationals. The investigation revealed that Sutherland was an active member of Central District Football Club in Adelaide for their entire season which ended October 7.

Players and teams must abide by the “The 3 Point Qualification System” for eligibility to play at the USAFL National Tournament. “This rule is in place to allow for fair competition. The objective is to create participation throughout an entire season as opposed to one weekend,” commented USAFL President Andy Vanica.

As Brett Northey remarked about my new book about footy, Australian Football The People’s Game 1958-2058 (wallawallapress.com), Kevin Sheedy suggests that in the future when ‘the Los Angeles Coyotes play the London Wolves for four points’...

Where will footy be in its bicentenary year, 200 years after the world’s oldest form of codified football had its rules written down?  Will there be an international competition?  Or, more modestly, will many international players play in the new Australasian Football League, which will include teams from Auckland and Wellington?  If it is the second, then this will be a kind of reprise of 150 years ago when New Zealand won several matches at the 1908 Jubilee carnival, celebrating the game’s first 50 years.

Here's some thoughts of my own, and a call for discussion from our readership.

Victoria will host the first competitive AFL football to be played for the 2013 year when the NAB Cup begins with a triple-header match up involving Collingwood, Essendon and the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Friday February 15 next year.

AFL General Manager Broadcasting, Scheduling and Legal Affairs Simon Lethlean today announced the fixture for the opening three rounds of the 2013 competition, including the six divisions of three teams apiece for round one, that was introduced in 2011.

Round One has been split across two weekends, Mr Lethlean said, to ensure that all six match-ups of three teams apiece were played in twilight / night conditions in the late summer period, for the opening shortened games. All clubs then play two full-scale matches across the weekends of March 1-3 and March 8-9, with the leading two teams to contest the final on either March 15 or March 16.

All Round One match-ups will be broadcast on FOX FOOTY and, following the opening night at Etihad Stadium, the Geelong Cats will travel to WA to join West Coast and Fremantle at Patersons Stadium on Saturday February 16 while St Kilda will travel to SA to join Port Adelaide and defending champions the Adelaide Crows at AAMI Stadium on Sunday February 17.

Stephen Alomes, who fits in being a writer, broadcaster, painter and Adjunct Professor in the Globalism Research Centre at RMIT University when he's not writing for World Footy News, has released a book many years in the making.

It captures his passion for Australian culture and its place in the context of globalism, specifically focusing on Australian Football.  Having been a regular at International Cups and writer for WFN, it's no surprise the book includes consideration of international footy.  The result is: Australian Fooball - The People's Game 1958-2058

It embraces the future, towards the 2058 bicentenary of the game, as well as exploring recent changes over the last 50 years.  In the preface Kevin Sheedy sees a future AFL match featuriing Los Angeles and London ("the Los Angeles Coyotes play the London Wolves for four points"), and David Parkin also enthuses about the book.

‘If you love Australian football, its past, its present and its future, then you have to read this book’ (Kevin Sheedy).

‘A book for generations of Aussie football lovers ... a great read for the real football addict' (ex Carlton coach David Parkin)

AFL Fiji busy times plus call for Under 15s coach

Oceania

With David Rodan delisted from Port Power and the 29 year old's career in limbo with the hope of perhaps returning to original club Richmond – the competition that previously had carried his name in Fiji was recently held.

The ‘David Rodan Cup’ has from last year become the ‘Fiji Day Cup’. The first DRC was first held in 2009. The 2012 installment was held Wednesday last week (Oct 10). A key outcome of the day was the establishment of a 40-strong training squad of Under 15s (previously under 16s) for the 2012 AFL inter-Pacific Island tournament later this year. The invitation has been put out for an AFL-qualified coach to guide the enthusiastic youngsters.
