The Asian Championships played in Kuala Lumpur on 5th September, 2009 were immensely successful in terms of participation with 10 Senior teams, 3 Under 18 Teams, Auskick and over 400 players, seniors and juniors participating. After a day of intense competition, last year's winners Dubai (UAE) Heat and Jakarta Bulldogs both managed a repeat triumph in the Senior and Junior competitions.

Week two of the AFL's 2009 Finals Series sees the competition to move to sudden death, with all finals elimination from now on.

Last weekend St Kilda impressed the most, shaking off a recent downturn in form, to stifle Collingwood and win by 28 points. Geelong also affirmed that they are not a spent force, pulling away from the Western Bulldogs early and holding them at arms length for a 14 point victory.

In the other finals Adelaide eliminated an undermanned Essendon as expected by a record 96 points, and Brisbane staged a stunning comeback to knock out Carlton by 7 points.

In our second set of previews of teams for the 2009 EU Cup, WFN spoke to team coaches and managers from France, Scotland, Italy and Austria.

The French, Austrians and Scots will be eager to improve their standing over previous years, while the first appearance of an Italian side in European Australian rules football circles has created a huge amount of interest.

So far, we've looked at half of the 16 national teams that the organisers at Aussie Rules Europe are expecting to make the trip. Still to come are some very big names including reigning champions the England Dragonslayers, potential juggernauts the Irish Exiles, and the always-improving German Black Eagles.

Dubai Heat last weekend won the Asian Championships in a repeat of 2008, defeating the Singapore Wombats in the Grand Final. The Heat trailed at half-time but superior fitness saw them overwhelm Singapore in the final stanza to score a well-deserved victory.

Third and fourth spots went to the Bali Geckoes and Hong Kong Dragons, who were defeated in the semi-finals by the Heat and Wombats repectively.

The pinnacle of the Asian Football season, the Asian Championships this year were held in Kuala Lumpur at the Selangor Polo Club on 5th September.

In the Juniors grade, the Jakarta Bulldogs also went back to back, asserting their superiority over the St Johns Malaysian Warriors, though the Malaysian boys' effort is to be highly commended as they took on far more experienced rivals and gave them strong competition.

The Rheinland Lions reasserted their position as Germany's team to beat last weekend, defeating the Munich Roos 13.9 (87) to 8.3 (51) to take out the 2009 AFLG premiership at the Frankfurter Ostpark. The Lions have now won three premierships in a row, with the Roos runners-up in each of those seasons.

In Division Two, the Rheinland reserve grade team were unable to equal the effort of their senior team, going down to the Berlin Crocodiles by seven points. For the Crocs, the win marked their first premiership in any grade, with their seniors playing in Division 2 this year to rebuild after some tough seasons at the bottom of the table.

Reports from our German connections suggest the Crocs' move to second division has paid dividends to the club in terms of local development, the opportunity for more competitive matches meaning that the club's membership has grown greatly this year. The second division also created a venue for the new Stuttgart Emus club, as well as the reserve teams from Munich and Rheinland.

The Irish Exiles, representing the best Irishmen playing Aussie Rules in England, staged a massive final term comeback to defeat the England Dragonslayers by 9 points last Saturday, September 5th.

Played in sunny but windy conditions at Albert Road Recreation Ground in Bounds Green, London, the Exiles kicked 5 goals in the last quarter to triumph 9.9 (63) to 7.12 (54). Neither team kicked a goal against the wind all game, the Irish accuracy in front of goal getting them over the line despite the Dragonslayers' greater number of scoring shots.

The New York Magpies sewed up the 2009 EAFL Premiership this Saturday August 29 by taking down the Boston Demons at home at Tibbetts Brook Park. In extremely muddy conditions reminiscent of June’s slosh-fest against Baltimore-Washington, the home team kept the visitors goalless. This is the Pies’ first top-of-the-ladder finish in the EAFL since 2005, ousting reigning champions for the past 2 years, the Baltimore-Washington Eagles.

The Pies dedicated the victory to club stalwart and former president Doug Lewis, who celebrated his 100th game on Saturday - no small achievement in a league that plays only about 10 games a year!

In a strange gamble rookie Essendon coach Matthew Knights made a late decision to drop his only recognised ruckman for the Elimination Final against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium last night. With his best quality tall men either injured or suspended, Knights made the call to go with a smaller running side, opening the way for first year Irish player Michael Quinn to be brought up from the emergency list.

Although having the willingness to make such a dramatic decision has to be respected, the reality is it was a disastrous outcome for the Bombers. Adelaide dominated the ruck like rarely seen in the AFL, with Ivan Maric and James Sellar running amok, their side registering 64 hit outs to 18. It wasn't just the number, but the decisiveness of the taps, meaning the Crows could set up their midfield knowing they had first use of the ball. Although a big win was always likely, there's no doubt the ruck situation contributed to the 96 point margin, Essendon's biggest ever loss in a final in their 102 year VFL/AFL history.

For his part Quinn had a very mixed game. It must be emphasised he was not selected as a replacement ruckman, instead playing through the midfield and sneaking forward. He marked early on uncontested but his set shot from about 25 metres out on a 45 degree angle was extremely poor with bad timing off the boot and only just registered a point. He atoned for that later in the quarter with another uncontested mark and goal from in front. One can only imagine the huge pressure on that second shot at goal, playing in his first final in his first year of Australian football with 50,000 spectators making a lot of noise.

The Regional Junior Football Championships were held last month in the Highlands of PNG. The Highlands are one of the four current “talent” regions in PNG. These are Highlands, Islands, Northern and Southern.

As part of the AFLPNG National Talented Player pathway, local championships are held in each region before the Nationals which will be held in Lae during September. The Nationals in Lae will consist of 27 teams across 4 divisions – Boys under 13s, 15s, and 17s and Girls under 15s.

The Danish Australian Football League are one of Europe's oldest Australian football leagues, with a history dating back to the early 1990s. For the first decade of their existence they were one of only two nations in Europe with a functioning national league, with clubs spread from the Jutland peninsula, across the Copenhagen region, to Helsingborg in southern Sweden.

However, once the youthful enthusiasm powered by the excitement of a new league faded, expansion in Denmark has been hard to come by in the past twelve years, with Swedish club Port Malmö the only new side in the DAFL Premier League since the year 1997.

This season saw a new team emerge in the city of Randers in Jutland, close to Denmark's second-largest city Århus. The Randers Dockers have just completed their maiden season in the Jutland 9s, a local league with the Aalborg Kangaroos and Århus Bombers feeding into DAFL Premier League team the Jutland Shinboners.

Driving force behind the Randers Dockers is Jens Djernes, a member of last year's Denmark Vikings team at the IC and one of two Vikings selected to the 2008 World Team.

In recognition of the many stars of Italian descent who have played in the professional Australian rules over the decades, the VFL/AFL Italian Team of the Century was selected in 2007, featuring such footballing royalty as Sergio and Steven Silvagni, Robert DiPierdomenico, Saverio Rocca, Mark Ricciuto and current star goalkicker Brendan Fevola. Named as honorary coach was 3rd generation Italian-Australian Ron Barassi, a great supporter of international Australian rules and one of the greatest players and coaches in the history of the game.

However, even while clubs and leagues are mushrooming elsewhere in Europe, footy has so far had a difficult time establishing an outpost in Italy, with a short-lived venture in Naples a few years ago the only presence before the formation of the AFL Italia this year.

In the northern city of Milan, footy fans Nicola Giampaolo and Armando Colombo have started a group playing Australian rules, consisting almost entirely of Italian nationals recruited from sports such as rugby, American football, soccer and basketball. A 15-man squad has been selected for the EU Cup, with only one non-Italian (a New Zealander) in the team.

There was no good news at AFL selection as the finals commence. Several players would have had hopes of playing this weekend but all have missed out.

The most bitter pill to swallow will be for Carlton's Setanta O'hAilpin, who after running into good form through the middle of the season has drifted back to the periphery and was this week dropped for the Blues' elimination final against Brisbane. The Lions' Pearce Hanley is due to have recovered from a hamstring injury but was selected.

Collingwood's Martin Clarke continues his time in the wilderness, having been absent from the senior team for a couple of months. At St Kilda there was no room for Colm Begley, while at Essendon their run of injuries and suspension elevated Michael Quinn to the status of emergency only.

Kevin Dyas (Collingwood) and Brian Donnelly (Adelaide) are still well short of a senior debut.

Hopefully by this time next year several of Ireland's exports will have established themselves as regular players in their club's first 22 chosen. Many of them seem to have landed at successful clubs - a good thing overall but not if you're trying to break into a team.
